June = strawberries

Last Saturday we all piled in Moby and went to find some strawberries waiting to be picked.  A tradition we began after moving to Virginia, this was the second time Moby tagged along for the fun.  Although she is not a good picker of berries, she does a great job of getting us to the fields and back in style!  Actually, this was our second attempt this year after heading out to Orange, VA last weekend.  There we found the fields picked clean and came home with little more than enough strawberries for snacking.  But the day was not lost as we hit a little burger joint in town called Wise Guys for lunch and drove some beautiful country roads along the Rapidan and Rappahannock rivers. This recent trip, we found success out in Delaplane, VA.  Not only did we find bountiful strawberry fields but had gorgeous scenery to keep us company.

The kids dove right in, trying to out do each other in number of red berries picked.

It was hot but pleasant in the fields with a nice breeze to accompany the sun.

I think this one got eaten by the guy in glasses.

24 lbs of strawberries to eat! I think I will try making jam this year.

My mom joined us for the fun (and a trip in the bus!).

  1. That looks like great fun!! And the countryside out there is so beautiful. Did you end up making jam, or did you eat them all? 🙂

    • I did make some jam, 12 half pint jars worth. However, my skills are amateur at best. It’s good, but not great. I think I’ll try and get your mother’s recipe for next year – start with something I know is great! I’ve also decided strawberry season is not as healthy as one might expect; what with all the short cake, whipped cream, ice cream, belgium waffles, and such. I was amazed at how fast we went through 24 lbs of berries!
